The Nurse Case Manager (NCM) provides medical and coordination services to assist injured associates in reaching maximum medical improvement and return to work. The nurse case manager initiates communication with the injured associate, the Zurich adjuster, the MVW resort, treating physician(s) and ancillary providers to assist the injured associate in obtaining prompt, appropriate and quality medical treatment. The ultimate goal is for the injured associate to recover and return to work as soon as is medically appropriate. The nurse case manager helps facilitate transitional duty to allow the injured associate to return to work within the applicable physical restrictions assigned by the doctor.

SCOPE/EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS

Scope

  • Case management of associates with occupational illness/injuries to coordinate prompt intervention.
  • Addresses occupational injury/illness with the proactive component of aiding the associate in choosing a provider, or accessing the insurance carrier’s provider network/managed care network.
  • The NCM jurisdiction of responsibility may include multiple states.

Expected Contributions

  • Providers
  • Identify quality health care providers through professional networking, visiting and discussing the unique needs of MVW associates and resorts to include transitional duty, early return to work and the role of the NCM.
  • Arranges for prompt and appropriate medical treatment of an injured associate by qualified providers (choice of providers as per regulations); Schedules appointments to avoid delays in treatment by primary care physicians, specialists or ancillary services.
  • Assists the treating physician in developing a written treatment plan for the injured associate, including the scope of treatment by any other providers to which referrals have been made. Work with the medical providers to track progress and to adjust the treatment plan as necessary.
  • Cooperates with the treating physician to obtain a full or conditional release to return to work; coordinate with the treating physician to update any conditions as medical treatment progresses.
  • Facilitate authorization of procedures, diagnostic testing, physical therapy/occupational therapy and durable medical equipment to ensure suitable treatment is not delayed.  Participate in interventions requiring utilization review or precertification according to state requirements.
  • Organizes and review medical records to identify specific medical issues; provides information and recommendations to appropriate parties.
  • Obtains medical reports and required work status forms. Ensures appropriate parties receive reports.
  • Associates
  • Contact injured associates within 24 hours following report of injury.  Maintain contact through life of claim or until maximum medical improvement is achieved.
  • Coordinate appropriate care and prompt return to full duty for all transitional duty and lost time cases
  • Serve as an advocate for the injured associate with all parties while maintaining the injured associate’s privacy and safety.  Follows ethical, legal, and regulatory standards.
  • Assesses the injured associate and his/her support system and family; factor all in facilitating treatment plan.
  • Claims
  • Collaborate with Claims department on case management. 
  • In coordination with the claims adjuster, refer catastrophic claims to outside rehabilitation management and closely monitor for effective progress.
  • Close cases of medical management when judgment dictates that case management will no longer alter the course or outcome of the injury/illness.  
  • Close cases if attorney representation does not allow NCM interaction.
  • Resorts and Operations:
  • Act as professional health resource for associates and managers.
  • Provide guidance to resorts following workplace illness/injury. 
  • Organize prompt return to work or transitional duty with associate’s supervisor.
  • Respond to local management inquiries, visiting resorts as necessary.
  • Coordinate with loss prevention, HR work environment professionals and regional managers/directors.
  • Health Promotion
  • Offer programs on health related issues to resorts as appropriate.
  • Speak to management and staff on case management coordination.
  • Record Keeping/Documentation
  • Provide consistent documentation and record keeping including periodic reporting to Director of Global Claims. 
  • Demonstrate continual awareness of claims cost containment including documentation of cost containment activities.

Other

  • Continuing Self Education
  • Maintain Registered Nursing license and advanced certification(s).
  • Attend professional meetings, personal study courses, etc., for continuing education credits.
  • Participate in education seminars and provide feedback on related issues
  • Utilize the carrier’s claims administration computer system to manage all claims electronically. 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Experience

  • Must have at least five years of experience in occupational health or workers compensation case management.

Education or Certification

  • Must be a licensed registered nurse
  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in nursing or related field
  • Certification as an occupational health nurse and/or case manager is desired.
